Re: [HELP] Installing and configuring Asterisk on Synology by david55 » Sat Jan 05, 2013 6:58 am There is no Asterisk syntax that would allow a range of users to be configured. Synology, to the best of my knowledge, does not provide any support for Asterisk on there so any Asterisk or Synology update might cause problems and patches and updates might not be forthcoming. Beyond that, PBXs are typically high priority and not appropriate for an SMB class NAS device. Installing 3rd party software on your Synology DiskStation DS411j. Jan 9, 2012 • Scott Granneman Note: I recently purchased a Synology DiskStation DS411j & I’m putting up posts about things I figure out. This is part of that series. The Synology DiskStation comes with a pretty darn complete collection of services & software that you can access & use through the DSM, the DiskStation Manager. Synology DiskStation DS212j Quick Installation Guide Synology_QIG_2Bay_20111018. The DS212j also has a Plex Media Server package inside the package center that I'm able to install, I've tried this but when I try to play the movie from my iPad with the Plex app or from my browser, I'm unable to run it because according to my research, the DS212j isn't powerful enough to offer transcoding.
Synology Ds212j Setup
I just bought a DS216j that I want to set it up 'right' with the best practices based on my desired usage. (Yes, I know plenty of argument to be had here.)
Where should I begin looking? I don't see any N00b setup threads, or I have been searching with the wrong terms.
I want to use the NAS as follows, in order of importance:
Securing it from internet attacks. (Yeah, I know.. pull the Ethernet cable.)
Auto backup/storage/replication from main PC with versioning of some sort to protect again source file corruption.. ~4TB data onto 2x8TB HDDs RAID-1. (Data doesn't change TOO often. Mostly warm storage)
Blue Iris storage target (Just a simple share I believe? I'm off-loading BI to a dedicated mini-PC. (Should I use FTP or stick with SMB??)
VPN server (Hope to make it accessible from anywhere.. too skeered right now.. see below)
'Low-power mode' if at all possible.. no heavy processing. I want to minimize power usage for now. (Eventual solar/mobile setup)
Tales of phantasia translation. We would like to show you a description here but the site won’t allow us.
(OH BOY. here goes) Run the NAS from a thumb drive, using the encrypted internal drives as storage only. So removing the USB drive makes the data useless. (I know this will incur performance issues (and limited writes to USB, etc).. I realize this may not be possible)
I am throwing everything out there now, because some of these probably can't be retro-fitted (Installing OS on thumb drive)
My current NAS is a DELL R710 with PERC 6/i SCSI drives that I wish I could reuse in this NAS, but I need a rack mount model, right?

I just read about the SynLocker thing going around, so I turned off remote access until I can get it secured (I'm kinda paranoid with my data. did ya notice?) I'd like to remove the Default Gateway so that it can only talk locally, but I guess I have to do that in my DHCP pool, since the OS doesn't seem to provide a 'LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY' option that I have discovered. (Item 1 above should solve this.)
Any advice and criticism is welcomed! (I have my big boy pants on, so let's hear it!! :D )
Installing Asterisk On Synology Ds212j Installation Tool
It's an interesting idea but I'd not do that unless you are just doing that for home. You want a fully supported PBX platform for business use, not just Asterisk 'available' on Synology. Synology, to the best of my knowledge, does not provide any support for Asterisk on there so any Asterisk or Synology update might cause problems and patches and updates might not be forthcoming.
Asterisk On Synology
Beyond that, PBXs are typically high priority and not appropriate for an SMB class NAS device. Synology is nice but this isn't a good use for it, in my opinion.

Do you not have a server to put a PBX on? What is driving you to want to consider this route?
